December 2009 — During the fall months, construction workers made significant progress on the new University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital facility – including interior and exterior milestones.
Inside the new facility workers completed the metal framing for the walls in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and bone marrow transplant unit, and erected the walls in the 3rd-floor PICU and the pediatric emergency department.
The most visible change within the modern new children’s hospital construction is the distinctive exterior siding. In August, workers installed the first of the unique Granex™ metal panels, manufactured by Rimex Metals, on the western side of the building. In September, crews removed the white proactive coating, revealing brightly-colored panels that reflect blue, green, gold, maroon or purple — depending on how the sun is shining on them. Made from anodized stainless steel, these unique metal panels contain recycled material and are resistant to corrosion. To date, only two other buildings in the U.S. have used the Granex product. “This building will be memorable in more ways than one,” states Russ Williams, vice president of Facilities and Operations. “We will be providing exceptional care in a state-of-the-art facility that may also quickly become an iconic piece of architecture in the Twin Cities.”
