Heart Failure and Transplant Program

CV Heart Echo LogoInnovative treatments and care

Your child’s heart condition certainly can feel scary to your child and alarm you. We get how tough it can be, especially at the start. With our heart failure and transplant team, you’ll quickly find that your child is in extremely competent hands. This team will customize your child’s care, relying on the most proven and innovative medical and surgical treatments. These can range from heart transplantation to advanced medical management to circulatory-assist devices using the newest technologies available.

Why parents choose us

  • More than 80 children have received heart transplants since the center’s inception in 1981.

  • Our doctors have helped several children who were high-risk patients with advanced pulmonary hypertension or heart failure from congenital heart disease.

  • The youngest heart transplant patient was 1 month old.

  • Our program's longest heart transplant survivor received his heart in 1986. His is the longest survival rate on record for a pediatric heart transplant in the United States.

  • Our center is one of only 22 transplant programs in the country and the only hospital in the Twin Cities mtro area approved to implant the Berlin Heart® into children. This mechanical device helps pump blood to the body. Without it, some children who need a transplant might die while waiting. In other cases, the pump can help heal the heart so that no transplant is necessary.

  • In 2008, a pediatric patient was able to successfully wean off the Berlin Heart. He is now healthy and active, and no longer needs a heart transplant.

We specialize in helping your child and you receive the most considerate and compassionate care. Our track record as specialists is nationally recognized, but you’ll find our patient-friendly approach to care to be equally remarkable. The physical health of your child and the emotional well-being of the entire family during a difficult illness is our top priority.
