We are the Minnesota Lions Children's Eye Clinic, established in 1969. As one of the of the country’s largest pediatric-dedicated ophthalmology programs, each year more than 5,000 children—from infants to young adults—receive the finest eye care from our ophthalmologists. They work in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota and at specialty care clinics in the Twin Cities metro area.

Does your child have a vision problem? Or have an eye disorder? Our ophthalmologists work closely with orthoptists who have special training in examining children’s vision and other eye disorders. We often coordinate with our colleagues with highly specialized training in contact lens and oculoplastics, as well as cornea, retina, neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma.

Providing specialty care with our colleagues

To provide care to patients whose eyes are affected by a wide range of conditions, our ophthalmologists often collaborate with colleagues in other fields. These include—among others—neurology, oncology, neonatology, genetics and rheumatology.

From eyeglasses and medication, to surgical and non-surgical treatments, our ophthalmologists provide integrated services only found at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital. For example, we offer very specialized screening exams and tumor treatment, as well as screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital collaborates with the National Institutes of Health Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group. Often this joint research results in effective treatment plans for both common and rare eye conditions. We also conduct research studies that affect international treatment protocols for best practice.
