How our bodies make energy
Metabolism refers to how our bodies make energy from the fats, carbohydrates and proteins we eat. Enzymes in the body’s cells help convert the food into energy. When enzymes have an inherited error, sometimes called a mutation, it may affect metabolism or cause a metabolic disease.
Minnesota's source of diagnosis and treatment of inborn errors of metabolism
That's where we come in. We have the only program in Minnesota that diagnoses and cares for children with inherited metabolic diseases, also known as inborn errors of metabolism. We provide genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis, newborn genetic screening, nutrition services, and infusion therapy.
A team of compassionate, skilled providers is ready to help you and your child understand the metabolic condition and move toward health management.
Listen to the podcast, "Focus on Dayton, Ohio", for an interview with Jeanine Utz, PharmD, BCOP, BCPS, supporting awareness and treatment of patients who have a rare disease. Even patients with rare diseases, like young Armand mentioned in the interview, receive the benefits of research and leading-edge treatments at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital.
