Things your baby may do during this period
- Explore their environment
- Developing attachment to others
- Crawl; pull to a standing position
- Learning first words
Effects hospitalization may have on your baby
- Routines may be altered (meals, sleep, etc.)
- Multiple caregivers may add to your baby’s anxiety with strangers
- May demonstrate frustration with restrictions (I.V., monitors, etc.)
- Regression may occur (making it easier to cope with changes of hospitalization)
Ways to support your baby’s development in a hospital setting
- Have parent or primary caregiver present
- Follow routines if possible
- Encourage safe exploration when available
- Bring familiar/comfort items from home (blanket, toys, etc.)
- Fill out “Things To Know About Me” and post over crib
- Use crib/bed as a safe space
- Avoid the crib for any type of procedure
