University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview offers a full spectrum of treatments for children, ranging from minor injuries to behavioral services and life-saving care.  Our physicians are experienced, highly trained and board-certified in pediatric emergency medicine or emergency medicine, providing exceptional care.

The Emergency Department at University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview provides 24-hour care to infants, children, teens and young adults with convenient, around-the-clock access to University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview pediatric specialty services.

Child-friendly Services

The University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview Emergency Department provides child-friendly exam rooms and equipment along with a pediatric waiting area with books and videos to keep children occupied during their visit.

Visiting the Emergency  Department

If you think your child is experiencing a life-threatening medical emergency, call 911 or immediately bring your child to University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview’s Emergency Department.

Common reasons you may want to call 911 or bring your child to the Emergency Department include:

  • Bleeding
    - Deep wounds or continuous bleeding
    - Continuous vomiting or vomiting blood
    - Continuous diarrhea or blood in stools
  • Breathing difficulties
    - Shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Burns
  • Pain
    - Broken bone
    - Difficulty with movement or feeling after an injury
    - Injured or stiff neck
    - Sharp or sudden severe pain
  • Poisonings
  • Responsiveness
    - Your child becomes poorly responsive or unresponsive for any reason
  • Trauma
  • Unusual body temperature 
    - Fever that causes your child distress or lasts more than 3 days
    - Temperature higher than 100.5 F in infants younger than 3 months
    - Temperature lower than 94 F
  • Additional emergency symptoms to watch for

If time allows, it is helpful to bring the following materials for your child’s visit to the Emergency Department:

  • Your child’s immunization record
  • Your insurance card
  • Name and phone number of your child’s regular doctor or clinic
  • Your pharmacy’s telephone number
  • Any medicines your child is taking (or a list of drugs and dosages)
  • Your child’s security object or favorite toy
