Eating Disorders KDWB University Pediatrics Family Center - STAR Center Phone: 612-626-4260 Eating disorders can have life long psychological and physicalconsequences. At STAR Center, we know there isn’t one person or event to blame for the development of an eating disorder and believe that early, effective treatment of eating problems leads to the best chance of a full recovery in children and adolescents. At STAR Center, we provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach for individuals and families. As a University-based practice, we strive to provide state-of-the-art care and to achieve excellence in research and teaching. At the STAR Center, our team of physicians, psychologists, nutritionists and family therapists treats each child with a personalized program to best meet his or her needs. Our Patients Adolescents and young adults (less than 24 years of age) with possible eating problems. We offer an initial assessment and ongoing care, and referral to other outpatient or inpatient treatment programs if needed. Conditions We Treat
Evaluation We first complete an initial half-day evaluation, including psychological, nutritional, and medical assessment. Children and adolescents who are less than 18 years of age need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Individuals 18 years of age or older can choose whether or not to have a parent or guardian attend the appointment. The evaluation ends with individual or family feedback regarding diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Treatment The STAR Center offers individualized outpatient programs for adolescents, young adults, and their families. We use a team-based approach that addresses all of the personal, family, social, nutritional, and medical complications of eating disorders. The STAR Center offers
Outreach The STAR Center also provides community outreach and teaching on the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. We are committed to preventing eating problems in community settings; and we have worked with Girl Scout troops and with University housing facilities, a student health service, cleaning services, sororities, academic student organizations, and athletic teams. Research The STAR Center is involved in research, including a multi-site study on the treatment and efficacy of eating disorder services in the Twin Cities. For information about available research opportunities, please contact Dr. Boutelle. We also coordinate the Twin Cities Eating Disorder Journal Club that welcomes providers from all local eating disorder treatment programs. Our Team All of our clinicians have special training in adolescent health care and expertise in the treatment of eating disorders during adolescence and young adulthood. Clinicians
