General Information and Pre-Adoption Consultations:
Appointments (M-F, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.): 888-KIDS-UMN The International Adoption Clinic is the first clinic in the United States providing for the health needs of children adopted internationally. Since 1986, we have been caring for children from countries all over the world, including Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Columbia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Vietnam. Through our clinical services, our team offers medical evaluations before adoption, initial health screens after adoption and follow-up care for children with special physical, developmental and social-emotional needs associated with international adoption. Our staff is uniquely qualified to meet the needs of children who are new to this country. Services We Provide Pre-Adoption Medical Evaluations—The International Adoption Clinic can be available to provide medical consultations while you are traveling abroad to meet your referred child. While you are in-country, you may send materials to our clinic office via e-mail; upon receipt of the information, one of our international adoption medicine professionals will respond usually within four hours during our regular business day (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., CST, Monday-Friday). Post-Adoption Health Assessments—The International Adoption Clinic sees any child who has arrived in the United States as a result of an international adoption. During your child's visit to our clinic, our care team will evaluate your child's growth, development, and physical status. As part of this examination, we will also test for diseases that may have been contracted before adoption. During this single appointment, your child will be seen by three specialists--a pediatric nurse practitioner, a pediatrician, and an occupational therapist. Further assessments by specialists in nutrition, cardiology, psychology, ophthalmology, and audiology are also available if needed. Follow-Up Medical Care—Some children will require follow-up care after the initial health evaluation. We provide these services through a separate appointment. For more information, please visit http://www.med.umn.edu/peds/iac/. Research Activities The International Adoption Clinic conducts groundbreaking, independent research in the field of international adoption. Our researchers also perform research in collaboration with individuals in a number of different fields. Currently, our investigators are accepting participants for enrollment in The Eastern European Adoption Study. Young children (8-48 months old) coming home from Eastern Europe are invited to participate in this study, which examines growth and development during the children’s first six months home.
