Welcome to The Heart Center at University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview. The large field of open-heart surgery began at the University of Minnesota, which has remained a national leader for more than 50 years in developing new ways to treat heart conditions in children. Today, the tradition continues, as University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview and University of Minnesota Physicians offer hope and superior results for infants and children with various heart conditions and abnormalities.
We have made many remarkable “firsts” here, including:
- The first infant heart transplant at 6 months old, and have since performed a heart transplant surgery on a 1 month old
- Physicians here were also the first to develop devices delivered through a catheter to repair cardiovascular abnormalities
- In 2005, we opened a new combination catheterization lab and operating room suite which unites surgery and interventional
(catheter-based treatment) cardiology to allow for hybrid procedures
Our team of cardiology specialists is the region’s best at finding the cause of illness without having to do surgery. We offer cardiac catheterization techniques, which include nonsurgical alternatives for treating some heart defects, cardiovascular surgery and cardiovascular intensive care. Our research in pediatric cardiovascular medicine is nationally and internationally recognized.
Our goal is to continue to offer children and families the highest quality care through treatment options that improve the lives of our patients. University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview also believes in family-focused care meaning family is the main source of hope and healing as an essential part of the care team.
